JAMPRO - Jamaica’s investment and export promotion agency - was established in 1988 to stimulate, facilitate, and promote the development of trade and industry, and export and investment activities in all sectors of the island’s economy. The agency drives this process through focus on a number of targeted sectors which include the creative industries (film, music and entertainment), manufacturing, tourism, agri-business, information and communication technology, mining, and professional services.
JAMPRO has two focal points - investment and trade promotions – and has two local offices as well as an office in London serving Western Europe. Jamaica Trade & Invest also makes use of embassy facilities. In recent years the agency has put an extra focus on local direct investments to encourage Jamaican nationals to invest in Jamaica and has also committed to improving the business climate and the investment attractiveness for the country, in partnership with other government agencies.
In facilitating investment, JAMPRO guides investors through the necessary steps to making their projects possible, and also walks them through the approvals process and stays with them even after their investments are operational.
Operating under the direction of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, JAMPRO's continuous mission is to promote Brand Jamaica, attract and land jobs and wealth-creating investments to Jamaica and secure lucrative markets for quality Brand Jamaican products.
The agency is committed to ensuring sustainable development arising from foreign direct investment into the country - both in terms of the environment and in the deepening of the absorptive capacity of the economy by encouraging growth in local direct investments.
In 2008, JAMPRO was the recipient of the international accolade: “Best Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) from a Small Country”, awarded at the 7th World Conference of Trade Promotion Organizations held in the Netherlands in October of that year.
SERVICES OFFERED BY JAMPRO
Functioning under the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, JAMPRO is the Government of Jamaica’s premier economic development agency, linking and leveraging investment and business to, within, and outside of Jamaica to impact every sector in the local economy.
JAMPRO is an Export Centre and Business Information Point, providing a wide range of value added services to the local business community aimed at increasing performance and profitability. Business Information Points are both virtual and physical offices specifically set up islandwide to give micro, small and medium enterprises access to a range of standardized and value-added business information.
By 1988, the newly minted organization was incorporated as a limited liability company with the mandate of handling investment promotion and facilitation, trade promotion, and trade services, regulation of export procedures, modernization of industry, and allocation of factory space.
Two years later, the JAMPRO (1990) Act was passed in Parliament, establishing the company as a statutory body by the Government of Jamaica. JAMPRO officially adopted the new name Jamaica Trade and Invest in 2007, but has subsequently reverted to the original name JAMPRO.
