The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) was established in 1955 as the Central Planning Unit (CPU) with the mandate to provide the Government with research and data information for the development process. The CPU became the National Planning Agency in 1974. The functions, however, remained the same. In 1984 the Agency became a statutory body and its name was changed to the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
