British Council is the UK’s international cultural relations organization. In Jamaica we focus on education; and in that regard we promote UK education through an up to date website and state of the art on-line information system, partner with the Ministry of Education in school improvement through leadership development and we provide examination services to UK institutions with local distance learners. We administer the Chevening Scholarship funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and we are also a centre for the International English Language Testing System Exam (IELTS).
British Council projects include the DFID Global Schools Partnership Programme, which offers guidance and grant support to Jamaican schools seeking to develop learning partnerships with schools in the UK. The DGSP programme also offers professional development opportunities to teachers involved in partnerships, through workshops and accreditation arrangements.
The Connecting Classrooms project aims to draw together networks of UK schools, teachers and Local Education Authorities (LEAs) working in partnership to examine models of best practice, and to engage and share in professional dialogue with colleagues across the world through demonstrations of what happens in various classrooms.
