Mapping Kingston

1738-1747
This map of Kingston is inscribed to his Excellency Edward Trelawny, then the Governor of Jamaica. It shows Kingston divided into blocks and numbered lots of land. Just as important as the land is the sea, the map depicts a vibrant maritime commerce taking place in the harbour along ther bottom edge of the map.

1807
In 60 years, the Kingston of this map has expanded north of North Street, with new roads, squares, and pens surrounded the city of 1747. The Old Road leading north toward Half Way Tree and the road west to Spanish Town are notable as the main routes out of the city.

By the time this map was drawn in 1854, Kingston had been thoroughly established as jamaica's main city. Along its border are engravings of Kingston landmarks and a scene from the ever-important harbour.

This hand-drawn map of Kingston in 1935 shows a city reconizable today. The city has spilled over the boundaries of Downtown and spread up the various valeeys -- through the Village of Halfway Tree, Knutsford Park and Swallowfield, to Constant Spring and Stony Hill in the north, Papine and the Hope Eastate in the east, and Sandy Gully in the west.
